Wiegand Wire Contactless, Non-Mechanical Turn Counting for Multi-turn Rotary Sensors
Multi-turn absolute rotary sensors have traditionally been done with complex, unreliable slip-ring potentiometers or difficult and expensive clock-work gear train counters that would make the Swiss proud! Now Everight Sensors brings you a truly economical, totally contactless, non-mechanical multi-turn sensor solution that combines Wiegand Wire technology with flash memory for total performance and reliability.
Wiegand wire is a specially produced ferromagnetic wire that has a soft magnetic center, the core, and a work-hardened surface with a higher magnetic coercivity, the shell. When an alternating magnetic field of proper strength is applied to a Wiegand wire, such as from a rotating permanent magnet, the core’s magnetic field will switch polarity and then reverse again, causing a Wiegand pulse to be generated. The pulses representing one complete turn of movement in either direction is noted by the sensor’s microprocessor and stored in a flash memory for permanent accessibility. It’s the best of all worlds…simple, elegant, contactless, non-mechanical, totally reliable and economical turn counting for absolute rotary position.
